Niche Market Strategy

In the previous post I talked about the difinition of niche market as it pertains to marketing on the web.

You may wonder why is it so important to develop a niche marketing strategy.

For one thing it is easier to run a tight, highly focused website than one that is broad based.

I used the example last time of Himalayan Persians. It is much easier to run a website about that particular breed of domesticated house cat than to run a website about all cat breeds.

Another reason for developing a niche market strategy is typically you want to develop a website that you are interested in. If a love in your life or a passionate hobby is Himalayan Persians you are going to be more excited about running that website.

You will be more knowledgable about the niche subject and you will also enjoy learning even more about your niche and then pass that newly learned information along to your website and visitors.

Last time I said a niche website meant more money.

You may ask yourself... Can't I attract more people and more visitors with a broad based interest?

Yes, it is certainly possible and there is nothing to stop you but consider this.

Think about one of your hobbies or outside interests. I bet you are really passionate about it.

You want to read and learn more about it. You buy more products all the time based on the things you really love to be involved in.

Well, it is the same with a niche market. If you have a website about a particular interest that lots of people love, they will come back to your website over and over, spending more money, being involved in the little community of other people that share their same interests.

Also, there is typically less competition in a tightly focused niche. People are more likely to find your website through the search engines (which means free traffic).

That is why you want to develop a niche market strategy.

To develop a niche website about something that people are passionate about and will return often and spend more money.

To start things off with my first post I will define the word niche in the context of what this blog is about.

Niche markets on the web.

A niche is a small or narrow field of focus about a particular subject.

For example: Animals is a broad subject. Felines are animals but now we have narrowed down the subject or market even more.

Felines could mean any type of large or small cat domesticated or wild. So we narrow our market down even more. Domesticated house cats. That seems to be a pretty narrow niche but I am going to narrow it down even more.

How about a niche market dedicated to domesticated house cats of the Persian variety.

A Persian cat is a special breed of long haired cat. But I am not quite yet done. To narrow this niche down even more our niche is going to be about Himalayan Persian Cats.

There, now I am done.

We have narrowed our field of focus down to a subject that is very small. We went from broad to narrow. This is how you define a niche market.

Animals
Felines
Domesticated House Cat
Persian
Himalayan

We broke our subject down to a very small and focused niche.

Now, that we know the definition of a niche market, you may think...

So What?
Who cares?
What is the big deal and what is so important about niche markets on the web?

We'll, the big deal is MONEY!

A niche market makes it a whole lot easier for you to build a website, get content or write articles
and most importantly to get into the search engines so your website can receive free traffic.

So that is the niche definition. A narrowly focused website subject.
